Display Ideas

Displays grab the attention of our customers. Make them attractive, and they'll think, "Why not?" Best of all, they increase CIRCULATION of Brooklyn Public Library... which is good for everyone :D

Change your displays frequently. Make sure they are stocked with new looking books with interesting covers.

Here are a few ideas from our fellow interns:

Bedford
Book display: Interns created an awesome Urban book display.
Bulletin board: They are creating a safe sex display in time for Valentine's Day & even ordered condoms & supplies from the Department of Health. It's titled "no glove no love" with a condom border

Pacific
We created a specific "staff picks" area (with a BIG sign) for Anthony and Nagi's book displays. They're going to be creating new displays every couple of weeks. These are the themes so far:
Superbowl--books about football and books with tips for throwing a superbowl party
Recommended reads--personal recommendations from the interns

McKinly Park
We created a section for "interesting" and "appealing" books in the YA fiction section in our library. We even decorated the background showing the theme of the books. Its like a reccommened reads section except it has its own section. We are planning to create a "skit/ even better a powerpoint" for children of all ages and adults about Global warming for Earth Day. But we are still working on it and hope that it'll follow through. We also have a bunch of ideas on connecting, teaching awareness and helping out the community.
We created a Valentine's Day Display with paper and beads making it "pop out" to the readers. Also reccommending some Valentine's Day books to the YA's.
Also made a Black History Month Display for the J-section along with reccommending some books of some famous African American people for the children to learn about. Its really nice and clean display for the children to learn and read about how these African Americans were able to overcome all the racist times of America and become the successful beings that they are today.
For Women's History Month, we are planning to make a display in the J-section displaying some important women role models to children nowadays. We are using Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama,etc, along with their picture we are also putting cool and interesting facts, quotes that normal citizens would now know. This is a fun and cool way to display something to the community and teaching them something about someone they love to watch on tv everyday.
For the Book Display Contest, we created theme of all girls sort of "Girlicious". We found many books that goes with the theme of girls and we can constantly re-filling our shelves to help increase circulation!
Below our Display for the Book Display Contest, we have our "Too popular to shelve" Books. These are YA books that are returned and the carts are overflowed. This is a great way to help increase circulation by placing these books in their own special place.
We always try to pick the hard cover books because they seem to last longer in condition and they seemed to be more appealing to our YA patrons.
The Displays can be a mixture of different books like, YA Fiction, realistic fiction, manga, etc. Remember to be creative!

Find sheet music at the International Music Score Library Project, a sort of wiki that offers music scores free of charge.

McKinley Park
For our Creative Writing Class, we, MIP interns, came up with a prompt that involves Music Appreciation for our creative writing. The prompt is to think of your favorite song lyric and it can be ranged to 2-3 lines. Then using that favorite lyric, you will have to use that as the first sentence of your poem, story, monologue, etc. Have Fun with this! We're planning on coming up with even better and more ideas to celebrate Music Apprecitaion!

McKinley Park Branch: We planned to create this wonderful class of teaching kids about modern day technology but we had mountains of ideas that we couldn't decide and schedule which one to use so we were unable to do it. Our ideas was to teach teens about Picnik or to hold a class where kids tell other kids about their fav technologies (where they draw it/ explain it and maybe they can make that technology to a even better version than it already is as it is now. I believe that this can teach kids to be creative and very inventive to their max!)

Ideas for MIPS 2012

How about all of us get together for a sports competition? Prospect Park? MIPs and Mentors? Spring Break? MIPS vs. Mentors? branch vs. branch? Maybe we could do field day games like egg and spoon, sack race. or Badminton and hula-hooping? Maybe even volleyball or basketball.

Or we could get together to do a play or a movie about the library.

We could take a book and bring it to life.

Jen's bringing food right? :P
Or everyone could bring food from their cultures.

Wait for Me by An Na

Today's final book club meeting was a lively one. We read Wait for Me by An Na. Our discussion focused on the definition of success, family stories versus love stories, physical disabilities, racism within communities and finding your own identity.

The conversation became very entertaining when we started talking about the importance of music to Mina and Ysrael's characters. We spoke a great deal about the importance of music in our lives and our favorite bands. We also talked about the Wait for Me iMix that An Na has put on her website.

The book club has been one of the most fun and engaging electives in the Multicultural Internship Program. Congratulations to all of the interns who have participated in this year's book club discussions!

The First Part Last by Angela Johnson

The discussion around Printz Award winner The First Part Last by Angela Johnson was passionate, heartfelt and engaging. MIP Danielle declared this book her favorite compared to the other titles in the Book Club!

Johnson's non-linear timeline about teenage pregnancy and raising a child provided wonderful topics for the interns on this bright, sunny Saturday.

We discussed losing your identity after you have a child, parental reaction to teen pregnancy and how teens lives change when they have children.

The interns' opinions about the book and their interpretations of why the characters behave as they do are always refreshing and interesting.

Multicultural Poetry

April's MIP Book Club focused on multicultural poetry from around the world for two reasons, First, April is National Poetry Month. And second, this week (April 11th through April 17th) is Immigrant Heritage Week in New York City! Immigrant Heritage week celebrates the contributions and stories of NYC immigrants.

There were three poems that we discussed today. The first was I Curse Because by Wang Ping (born in China). We talked about the American Dream, immigrants changing their names and assimilation when moving to another country.

Today's second poem was The Worker Poet by Vladimir Mayakovsky (born in Baghdati, Russian Empire, now Georgia). We discussed "real work" versus other types of work, the intellectual versus the physical and whether or not more intellectual pursuits (like poetry) are equal in value to more tangible jobs.

Last, we discussed Americanizing by Cheryl Boyce Taylor (born in Trinidad). We discussed loss, anger, sadness and what it means to become "Americanized."

The interns did a fantastic job in interpreting the poems by bringing their own experiences of immigration to the discussion.

- at beginning of month, give interns Chase's Calendar of Events to inspire future programming and displays!

Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher

Today's book discussion on Chris Crutcher's Whale Talk focused on many of the themes in the novel. We discussed abusive relationships, racism, bullying, stereotypes, sportsmanship and Daoism.

The interns who participated called the book "powerful" and "emotional." Throughout the discussion, everyone expressed their own personal connections to the themes of the book to explain why the book meant so much to them.

It was a wonderful discussion that certainly help bond the "Book Club" attendees!

Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez

Today's book club discussion was lively, informative and fun!
It started with MIP intern Jasmine reading her favorite line from the book - "you can't dry yesterday's laundry with tomorrow's sun." This line, spoken by the character Chucha (page 145) kicked off a whirlwind discussion of the book and its characters.
In length, we discussed revolutions (specifically the Iranian Revolution in the late 1970s), adolescence, assassinations and stereotypes. One of our longest discussions revolved around the role of food in our lives. Topics included bone marrow, lambs heads and hot dogs :) This came from weighing the differences between American traditions and other cultural traditions.
The importance of objects and secrets in our lives was an important topic, as it was in the novel.
Thanks to the interns who participated in this great book discussion.

Cypress Hills: MIPs as interpreters

Cypress Hills' MIP interns, Afroza and Rokshana, came up with a great way to use their language skills to help our public. Though neither of them can read or write Bangla (also called Bengali), they are both fluent in it. When I asked them if they would like to interpret for patrons, they came up with a great idea: they asked a friend how to write "Do you need help? We speak Bangla!" and made a beautiful sign. I've attached a photo.

I've suggested that they sit with the sign at a table near the reference desk for about an hour or so, after letting the librarian at the desk know that they are available for patrons. This way, they won't spend all of their time at the branch interpreting - I wouldn't like them to be pulled out of other activities or programs any time someone needs assistance. I've also emphasized to them that their job is not to answer questions, but just to act as an interpreter between staff and patrons.

Bedford: We did something similar to Taina's idea. The interns & I sat down and created a project/activity list and placed them in the MIP binder. When they come in they can just refer to the list and decide what they feel like doing that day. Below are some of the ideas we came up with.

Below is a Trimester Project Schedule that I crafted for my MIP intern at the Bushwick Branch. Rather than assign dates for each tasks provided, I gave a monthly checklist the intern can reasonably complete at their own pace. I wanted to offer oversight and independence, so that s/he can get a feel of a librarian role in the community. I thought this format would be easy to tailor to your particular branch programs, activities and services.

Bayou by Jeremy Love

For the first book club of the new year, we read Bayou by Jeremy Love. This graphic novel, winner of five Glyph Comic Awards and picked as one of YALSA's Great Graphic Novels for Teens, blends historical fiction with fantasy and spurred a great discussion!
We discussed the book's themes, including racism, slavery, friendship and redemption. We also focused a great deal on the symbolism in the book like the crows, butterflies and bugs.
The author was thought to be bold in his perspective and we felt the author's take on the story was deeply personal. Much discussion was also about the characters. Lily was considered a "frenemy," and Bayou and Lee were thought to be two parts of one whole person/creation.
A huge thank you to the interns who participated in today's lively and thought-provoking discussion. We are excited to read Bayou Volume 2 and we all hope that Volume 2 has page numbers :)
